Forests and thickets, sometimes along edges but mostly not a plant of open ground: in rich deciduous (beech-maple, etc.), oak or oak-hickory, aspen, or mixed forests; on forested dunes and bluffs and river banks. A showy, conspicuous, and easily recognized broad-leaved grass.
