In cedar swamps and other coniferous forests and boggy places, as well as deciduous and mixed forests, especially on wet seepy slopes, in depressions and clearings, and along forest roads. Very local southward.
The panicle is normally green. A few specimens (especially from the Keweenaw Peninsula and Isle Royale) have the panicle rather conspicuously tinged with purplish. See also notes under Cinna arundinacea.
