Mossy boulders and low mossy outcrops of calcareous rocks, usually limestones or dolomites, but sometimes sandstone, in moist deciduous forest understories; very rarely on mossy logs or stumps in the dune areas near Lake Michigan, as on South Manitou Island.

Very local and uncommon.
