A characteristic prairie species, but spreading along roadsides and railroads; in oak forests, jack pine plains, old fields, fens and sedge meadows. May be as tall as 3 m.
The staminate stalked florets are as long as the bisexual sessile ones or even a bit longer, and the anthers are similar in size (usually 2.5–5 mm long, rarely as small as 2 mm or as large as 5.5 mm).
