Rich deciduous or hemlock forests, often swampy or even on floodplains; often in sandy, presumably slightly acidic soils; uncommon in areas of limetone influenced soils.
A much smaller plant than P. quinquefolius, less than 30 (usually less than 20) cm tall, and blooming very early, with the main flush of spring woodland wildflowers, the foliage ephemeral, dying as the yellowish fruits ripens. A very different plant from our other species.
