In Michigan, thrives best on low dunes, in partial shade of fringing conifers, along the northern shores of Lakes Michigan and Huron and on Lake Superior (where it also occurs on thin soil over rock); inland, under jack pine and oak and also in coniferous swamps (cedar, tamarack, spruce, fir). Collected twice in Washtenaw County in the 1890's, but not since anywhere in the southern half of the Lower Peninsula.
