Open bog mats, generally in sphagnum, hummocks in fens, open coniferous (cedar, black spruce, tamarack) swamps, and in similar peaty situations.
One of the handsomest of our native orchids, becoming quite rare and local, especially in southern Michigan, thanks to destruction of habitats as well as to poaching. Blooms a little earlier than Calopogon tuberosus and Pogonia ophioglossoides, which are often in the same sites.
