Often on dunes, but rather local; also sandy open fields, sandy open woodlands. 

The basal pinnae are exaggerated in size, in contrast to the rest of the blade, which is often narrow and merely lobed. The stems are noticeably succulent. Michigan plants formerly recognized as Botrychium hesperium are referred now to this recently described species, B. hesperium being more western in range.
