In raw sand, mostly on Great Lakes dunes, best known from the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, sometimes in sandy, open areas inland, usually not far from the Great Lakes.
Apparently in circumneutral soils. The roots are sometimes deeply buried (up to at least 20 cm) in the substrate.
