Collected once in Michigan as spontaneous on a dump site west of Buchanan, Berrien Co. (R. Schulenberg in 1970, MOR). A native of tropical Africa, widely cultivated in warm climates for its young mucilaginous fruits, which are used as a vegetable. This genus probably should be included in Hibiscus; then called H. esculentus L.
