A common species, especially northward, of sandy, somewhat acidic soils of moist to dry deciduous and mixed forest understories.
Forming large colonies that are a distinctive feature of many northern hardwoods; in the north, especially near Lake Superior, it may occur in more open habitats.
A few specimens, from Alpena, Otsego, and Presque Isle Cos., appear intermediate between Dendrolycopodium dendroideum, and D. obscurum, and may be hybrids.
