Native principally in the Mediterranean region, occasionally escaped from herb gardens to roadside banks, refuse piles, and disturbed ground. First collected in 1942 in Berrien Co.
The commercial Greek/Turkish oregano is not the same subspecies commonly cultivated in North America. Origanum vulgare has calyx lobes ± equal. Other species, with more irregular calyx, are sometimes grown.
