In almost all kinds of moist places, including lake shores, edges of marshes, fens, moist disturbed ground and roadsides, ditches, clearings in bogs, rock crevices along Lake Superior.
Specimens of J. greenei might be keyed here, but can be distinguished by the mature capsules clearly exceeding the perianth, more compact inflorescence, and leaves (though very narrowly channeled) so tightly rolled as to appear terete.
This averages taller than Juncus tenuis and, while still somewhat weedy, is more frequently found in natural settings.
