Meadows, shores, river margins, mossy thickets, and adjacent somewhat disturbed areas. This is primarily a boreal species of eastern North America, but ranges down in the mountains to the southern Appalachians.
The small calyx lobes (linear or nearly so) are fully green and appear quite different from those of G. rubricaulis. A form with the corolla violet rather than blue is known only from Michigan.
