An eastern Asian species, grown (from Japanese seed) at Michigan State University as early as 1894. First collected as an escape in 1940 in Barry Co. and becoming locally conspicuous in the last 40 or 50 years along roadsides and fields.
This is a very late bloomer, flowering in Michigan from September into October.
