Cedar swamps and other moist coniferous and mixed forests. The only Oakland Co. collection dates from 1888 and those from St. Clair Co. from 1892–1894; otherwise, strictly northern.
This very uniform circumpolar species is the only one in the genus. The nodding flowers are rather frequently 4-merous (rather than 5-merous). Plants are usually less than 10 cm tall, but occasionally become as tall as 14 cm, when the fruit is erect.
