Cedar swamps, moist mixed or hardwood forests; usually in shady and moist conditions and often on hummocks, banks, bluffs; occasionally in the open on north-facing bluffs and ledges, sometimes forming dense mats; rare southward.
The thin, wiry, short, curly stems with mostly only 3 sheath teeth are unique in our flora.
