Northern hardwood or mixed conifer-hardwood forests, usually over calcareous rock outcrops or talus; only rarely in forests lacking exposed bedrock. Occasionally in open areas in sites like crevices in calcareous bedrock and ± open coniferous stands on thin soil over limestone.

Our eastern North American plant is subsp. brittonii Fraser-Jenkins & Widén.
