Sandy, open forests and forest edges with acidic soils.

Much more common, even weedy, to the east in southern Ontario and eastward and not found in Michigan until 1954 in Jackson Co. (a few old and doubtless mislabeled collections notwithstanding; see Drife & Drife (1990)). Then not seen again until its recent rediscovery in Jackson Co. in 2006 by John Fody.
