Wet depressions in trails, old roads, and fields, ditches, wet meadows, marshes, open forests.
A common species of open wet ground, more slender than S. atrovirens, and often in somewhat disturbed habitats that may also be only seasonally wet. A few specimens are apparent hybrids, S. atrovirens × S. hattorianus; these have abortive seeds and are mostly viviparous.
