Wet, sunny ground generally: marshes, shores, ditches, wet meadows and thickets, wet openings in swamps of all kinds, and other, mostly permanently wet, open ground. Scirpus atrovirens, and the other species in the complex, S. hattorianus and S. georgianus seem to occur in a wide range of wetlands, and seem indifferent to soils and pH. Nearly mature fruit, and sampling a number of achenes to check for the typical bristle number and length are very helpful for correct determinations.
