Very local on muddy or sandy shores or other moist places.
Occasional tall specimens of E. flavescens with soft culms might superficially resemble this species, but differ in lacking firm summits on the leaf sheaths and in having both the body and the tubercle (not flattened) of the achene greenish. Larson & Catling (1996) provide more details and more precise measuurements to separate this from Eleocharis obtusa.
Though appearing as a more northern species in Michigan, this is known sparingly from the Lake Erie strands in Ohio and Ontario, and might be found on Lake Erie in Michigan also.
