Marshes and marshy shores, hollows, ponds, swales, ditches, and river margins, seldom in water over 6 dm deep; also in bogs, on open mats and relic in tamarack swamps; often abundant where found, forming large beds. On any two adjacent culms from the same rhizome, one will have the leaves spiraled clockwise and the other counterclockwise.
A very distinctive species; the numerous leaves are perfectly 3-ranked, although the culms are terete or nearly so (and hollow).
