Often with tamarack in swamps and on floating mats of bogs and fens, open swamps, lake shores, wet thickets, swales, borders of marshes.
The flaming red to orange foliage in the fall is tempting to some persons who risk more than wet feet to gather it. The alternate pinnately compound leaves with entire shiny leaflets, together with the habitat, should readily serve to identify even vegetative plants.
