Moist forests and peaty ground, often abundant in bogs and coniferous swamps (or mixed hardwood-conifer stands), including marly situations, and particularly in open areas, seepy sites, and along trails; also in wet open sedge meadows, shrub carrs, and wet forest openings.

An easily recognized, abundant species with a single spike with a few perigynia shaped like miniature rice grains.
