Wet ground along rivers, rarely lakes and ponds; sometimes forming a characteristic band along the river bank.
This closely resembles Carex stricta, but has a distinctive habitat, and never forms large tussocks. The smooth, white-hyaline inner bands to the sheaths allow easy field recognition. in C. stricta, the sheaths are minutely roughened, and typically tinted with reddish-brown.
