Characteristically in crevices of rocks very near the edge of Lake Superior, where the spray from waves keeps the plants moist.

A northern species, the native North American plants distinguished as the glabrous subsp. borealis Crow, and ranging from Newfoundland and Labrador to Great Slave Lake, south to New England and Lake Superior.
