Vernonia gigantea (Walter) Trel.

Common Name: TALL IRONWEED
Coefficient of Conservatism: 3
Coefficient of Wetness: 0
Wetness Index: FAC
Physiognomy: Nt P-Forb

This ironweed is common immediately to the south of Michigan, but barely enters the state. Meadows, floodplain forests, marshy thickets, roadsides.

The name V. altissima Nutt. was long used for this species. Our plants have 22–27 florets per head, but a little larger range is to be expected.
