Fens, bogs, open conifer swamps (cedar, tamarack, spruce); wet, often sedgy, sand flats, shores, meadows, and swales.
The rays are usually white, sometimes pinkish or bluish. Occasional intermediate plants suggest hybridization with S. lanceolatum and S. puniceum.
