The native occurrence of this species in Michigan rests on a fragmentary specimen from near Alma, Gratiot Co. (C. A. Davis in 1894, US) but one cannot help but wonder whether some mixture of specimen or data occurred long ago with this fragment, as the species is not represented in Davis's own herbarium, now at MICH. Alma would also be a significant outlier for this species, which otherwise ranges southwest of Michigan, though known close enough in northwestern Indiana that it might one day be discovered at a more likely site in extreme southwestern Michigan.
It is now also regularly included in some so called prairie plantings and was collected as "Persisting...about 20 years" in such a planting in Lenawee Co. (not mapped). It was more recently found well established and spreading significantly from a planting in Oakland Co., and no doubt will be found elsewhere as an introduction.
