Native west and south of Michigan; the most frequently cultivated species, and our plants are doubtless escapes into marshy fields and ditches. First collected in 1952 in Ottawa Co.
An earlier Farwell collection, from Wayne Co. in 1920, contains a source attribution from Oklahoma and the plant was probably from cultivation and is not mapped.
