A Eurasian native, sometimes cultivated as a salad plant, especially in Europe. Collected several times in 1929 and 1930 along the St. Joseph River at Bertrand, Berrien Co., as an escape.
A vigorous variant of this species (Valerianella locusta var. oleracea (Schlecht.) Breistr.) is occasionally cultivated as a spring salad plant (mache, corn salad, or lamb's lettuce), but the origin of Michigan wild plants is unknown.
