Moist fields, moist to dry shrub thickets, open forests, and prairie-like habitats.

A slender species with small flowers often in a short inflorescence. Very late blooming, beginning in late September and extending even to early November. Michigan plants are var. erostellata Catling.This southern species has apparently been increasing in Michigan, with almost all records rather recent.
