An Old World species escaped to pastures, fields, roadsides, yards, old homesites, and disturbed places. Apparently much less cultivated (and hence escaped) than formerly; collected in Michigan as early as the First Survey (1837), but there are only two collections since1935.

Marrubium has been long cultivated and used to flavor candies, medicines, and beverages, and also with alleged medicinal effects.
