A forage crop, originally from Europe and only quite sporadically found in Michigan. Roadsides, railroads, fields, clearings, disturbed places. First collected in 1870 in Wayne Co. All or most of our specimens are V. sativa subsp. nigra (L.) Ehrh., often recognized as V. angustifolia L.
