Roadsides, fields, lawns, trails, disturbed ground; a European native invading dunes, rock openings, and moist habitats. The earliest collection from Michigan was by the First Survey, at White Pigeon, St. Joseph Co., in 1837, also collected in Livingston Co. in 1838 by Mary H. Clark, so clearly early widespread.
