Sandy, usually disturbed places such as dunes, shores, trails and roads in jack pine, oak, or aspen forests.
Resembles C. schweinitzii rather closely but generally smaller in size overall. This species apparently originated as a stabilized hybrid of C. lupulinus and C. schweinitzii (Marcks, 1974).
Named for Douglass Houghton (1809–1845), first head of the Michigan Geological Survey, and famous early plant collector in the western Great Lakes Region. His herbarium is at the University of Michigan. He first collected this species in 1831 in present day Wisconsin.
