Rich deciduous forests, especially in moist depressions, seeps, and along streams. Though not known from the Upper Peninsula, this occurs in the Lake Superior region of Wisconsin.
This is a very distinctive plant with peculiar often twisted pale green perigynia conically tapering to the short beak; the terminal spike is quite variable, often in the same clump, in whether or not there is a pistillate apex.
