Swamps (deciduous), floodplains, and swales and vernal pools in deciduous forests.
This is a striking species with large inflorescences and abundant, unique tall vegetative culms with numerous tristichous leaves; frequently cultivated under the name palm sedge. More than most members of section Cyperoideae in Michigan, this has short-creeping rhizomes by which plants may form relatively large clumps.
