Named for François-Louis Laporte, comte de Castelnau, who collected in Michigan and the Great Lakes region in 1843, although he is much better known for later expeditions to the tropics, and especially for his collections and studies of animals. A few common species he collected in Michigan are at the great Herbarium in Paris (P), undated and with negligible data.
