Placed in the Araceae in Michigan Flora. Bruised parts, especially at the base of the plant, have a very pleasant aromatic fragrance, rendering the genus easily identified from vegetative fragments. The candied rhizome has been for generations a popular confection, with reputed medicinal properties as well, in Europe, Asia, and America.
