Moist usually sandy ground and burned-over Polytrichum bogs, in sterile acidic soils; very local and often appearing after disturbance.

Although rare in the eastern Upper Peninsula, a 1902 Farwell collection purported to be from Keweenaw Co. is of unclear identity (see McVaugh, Cain & Hagenah, 1953) is not mapped.
