Dry to swampy deciduous forests and occasionally in conifer swamps.

The distinctive coarse, opposite, pinnately lobed leaves are conspicuous over a much longer season than the modest heads. The heads may have inconspicuous to minute white ray florets, these pistillate, or be entirely of disc florets.
