Floodplains, hardwood and conifer swamps (especially in openings, on hummocks, and in springy places), depressions in upland forests; stream margins, sedge meadows, fens, moist thickets, ditches.

See comments under P. indecora, to which this species is rather similar. Blades of the basal leaves can range from 0.5 to 10 cm broad.
