A large shrub or small tree from Japan with distinctive oblanceolate to narrowly obovate leaves. Occasionally cultivated, and first collected as an escape in 2012 in a mesic woods in Kent Co. by J. L. Heslinga.

The fresh foliage of this species has a strong, pungent, unpleasant odor when bruised.
