Wet meadows and thickets, openings in swamps, lake shores, river and stream borders, ditches.

A very few specimens appear to be intermediate with Stachys pilosa, and this is sometimes recognized as S. pilosa var. arenicola  (Britton) G. A. Mulligan & D. B. Munro.
