In Michigan almost completely restricted to sandy shores and dunes along the Great Lakes; also on sandy shores of Douglas Lake, Cheboygan Co. Normally rather densely silky, even on mature leaves, although occasional specimens have the foliage almost completely glabrous (var. abrasa Fernald).
