Open savannas, sandy roadsides and bluffs, river banks, fields and pastures; usually in dry ground, rarely in moist places. Michigan plants are mostly var. brainerdii, with 20 stamens; a few collections are var. scabrida (Sarg.) Eggleston (C. scabrida Sarg.), which differs in having mostly ca. 10 stamens.
