Known from Michigan waters of all the Great lakes and connecting rivers, and numerous inland lakes, rivers, and streams, at depths up to 4.6 m.

Even when the stipules are almost entirely gone, remnants of the fibers, giving a bearded aspect to the nodes, may usually be found.
