Apparently not found in Michigan since it was collected by the First Survey in 1838 from a dry prairie at Edwardsburg (MICH, GH, NY).

The sheaths are pilose, as in D. sanguinalis, the spikelets are similar in size to those of D. ischaemum (or slightly smaller) and likewise have the second glume and sterile lemma of about equal length, minutely pubescent with knob-tipped hairs.
